What are best products do you use when flat ironing natural black nappy hair?

My hair is natural and thick. i have just grown out a texturizer and do not want a relaxer. What inexpensive flat iron works best? And what products makes your hair smooth and reduces amount of frizz throughout the day?

I currently have natural black kinky hair, and I bought an 'Andis Ceramic Flat Iron' from Walmart for about 15.00 dollars, and it works sooo good ! I love it !

I was scared to used the higher heat settings, but I ended up buying a heat protectant to protect my hair, this step is very important, and don't use too much, because it will flake.

So after you apply the heat protectant, you can turn the Andis flat iron up high, and it will not burn or damage your hair, and it gets really straight and smooth.

You can tell if your hair is damaged, because after you wash or wet your hair, you hair should curl back up, but if your hair is damaged, the ends will remain straight, this happened to me, when I flat ironed my hair without using the heat protector straighten polish, this comes in a little clear bottle, with a pink top.

also be sure to buy a ceramic curling iron, only use ceramic products, they are better for your hair.

Thanks for the info 2teens2todds I too have natural black hair and I was wondering why my hair would not curl back up when I washed it. So what do I do since my hair is damaged? Do I have to cut of the damaged part and start over. Report It

You want to use a light oil, something like IC or Cantu, those are both really good at reducing frizz. Apply before you blow dry, and again after you flat iron. They provide shine and control without weighing the hair down. As for the flat iron, take it from someone who has tried almost everything on the market you get what you pay for. I have tons of flat irons that I've paid 20-40 dollars for that work great initially, and after a while they dont get the job done. I went out and purchased the Chi, it's like $120 but it works I have really curly, frizzy hair, and I dont get perms and my hair gets silky straight with this iron. Hope this helps...

i bought this hair gloss spray from lusters that works on every type of black hair. you can spray it in or gloss your hair after you iron it. either way it softens your hair and keeps up the style. TRY IT OUT!!!!!!

The type of shampoo and conditioner you use will make a big difference in how your hair turns out when you are flat ironing it. Make sure you use products that do not dry your hair out and that really condition it. Avoid shampoos that contain harsh detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate. To get smooth hair I recommend Northwest Scents natural hair care products. The products are very moisturizing and conditioning. Also, don't skimp on a flat iron. For best results use one of the higher quality tourlamine-ceramic flat irons that have an adjustable temperature (solia, sedu, chi). You want to be able to control the temperature so that you do not apply too much heat to your hair. Some heat is good, too much heat will burn your hair out. I didn't get good results with a flat iron until I switched from an inexpensive one to a temperature controlled solia.
