Use beeswax...it works great (somepeople mix different beeswax brands to get a really good effect!)

You also don't want to relax/perm your hair before hand as your hair may fall out.

Also try some different "Dred lock" products...even though you're not going for dreds, the right dred moisturizers are really good for your hair when doing kinky twists. Good luck.
